Azim Premji University, Bhopal, started operations in August 2023, offering postgraduate and undergraduate programmes. The first phase of campus construction is complete and the overall 50-acre campus with state-of-the-art academic and residential facilities will be ready over the next few years. We expect to grow to about 4000 students and 500 members over the next few years.

In addition to teaching in our programmes, we offer faculty an enriching and fulfilling institution-building experience encompassing interdisciplinary programme design, setting up and implementation of key institutional processes, culture building, and participation in various institutional bodies. The University encourages and offers support to faculty members for pursuing their own research. 

The programme in Heritage Studies deploys a broad definition of heritage that encompasses cultural and historical heritage, intangible practices and living heritage, natural and ecological heritage, scientific and technological heritage, archives, records and social memory. We are seeking candidates with demonstrable professional engagement with heritage practice in one or more of these areas.

The selected candidate is expected to join by the end of 2026.

  • We seek candidates with professional, research and organisational experience in museums and collections, heritage conservation, curation, archives, heritage documentation or related areas of heritage practice to teach and contribute to our Heritage Studies programme.
  • The candidate should be able to design and teach courses in Heritage Studies, including practice-based and field-based courses. They should be able to establish and sustain contacts with relevant organisations and practitioners to enable and coordinate student fieldwork, projects and internships.
  • An advanced degree in a relevant discipline with at least two years of professional experience in a heritage-related field, or a relevant disciplinary background with at least seven years of professional experience in a heritage-related field.
  • Candidates should have demonstrable professional competence in the field, documentation, technical and/​or scientific methods relevant to their area of heritage practice.
  • Prior professional experience in conservation, curation, collections, archives, documentation or working with heritage sites and resources is desirable.
  • Candidates with prior research engagement with heritage documentation, archiving, museum theory and practice, conservation, curation and collections will be given preference. Expertise with digital technologies, relevant platforms and applications used in heritage practice is desirable.
  • Academic familiarity with the history and heritage of South Asia.
