Meetings and Conferences
Spaces for undergraduate science and mathematics instructors to converse, troubleshoot, and innovate together

Details
Sustained improvement in higher education pedagogy rarely happens through one-off workshops or top-down training programmes. We believe that it happens through regular, low-stakes dialogue among practitioners who encounter similar classroom dynamics every day.
The USE Network’s regular meeting structure provides dedicated spaces for undergraduate science and mathematics instructors to converse, troubleshoot, and innovate together. By combining monthly virtual meetings with bi-annual in-person regional conferences, we offer flexible avenues for engagement that fit into busy academic calendars while fostering long-term professional relationships.
Our virtual meetings serve as the network’s primary avenue of community interaction. These hour-long sessions are organised around real-world pedagogical challenges rather than abstract theory. A typical session might feature an instructor presenting a specific classroom intervention, such as modifying a traditional physical chemistry lab to incorporate open-ended inquiry, or restructuring an introductory calculus module to support learners with a substantially diverse level of academic preparation.
Rather than formal lectures, these sessions prioritise structured peer feedback, open Q&A, and small group discussions. Periodically, we invite experienced science educators, guest education researchers and science communicators to present actionable insights on emerging educational strategies, active learning frameworks, and assessment design. Every session is recorded and archived, ensuring that instructors unable to attend live can still access the insights and shared materials.

While virtual meetings maintain our ongoing momentum, we believe face-to-face contact remains essential for deep collaboration. Twice a year, the USE Network convenes regional meetings hosted at partner institutions across different parts of India. These gatherings are specifically structured to address regional educational contexts, innovative classroom strategies, and emerging pedagogical practices tailored for diverse Indian learning environments.
Key elements of regional meetings include:
- Plenary sessions and keynote talks: Insights from leading scientists, education researchers, and invited specialists exploring current directions in science pedagogy and higher education policy.
- Workshops on educational research methodology: Hands-on sessions led by education specialists and discipline-based education researchers (DBER) to help instructors design, execute, and publish rigorous classroom research.
- Paper and poster presentations: Short talks and poster sessions where educators present their field-tested classroom innovations, low-cost laboratory tools, and pedagogical experiments.
- Interactive pedagogical workshops: Collaborative working sessions where participants test low-cost laboratory setups, co-design assessment rubrics, and practice active-learning facilitation techniques.
- Professional networks and peer support: Structured roundtables and informal exchange sessions designed to build lasting professional networks, foster cross-institutional collaboration, and connect educators with peer support systems across regions.
The upcoming regional conference will be hosted by Azim Premji University at Indian Heritage Academy, Bengaluru. Click below to register, submit an abstract, or for more information:
