Career Pathways for Psychology Undergraduates

From addressing mental health challenges to designing better user experiences and interfaces, and more

The BSc in Psychology programme at Azim Premji University is designed to provide a comprehensive outlook, considering the changing landscape of psychology that emphasises replicable experiments, mathematical models, randomised controlled trials, and neuroimaging techniques, as well as social-justice oriented approaches and psychosocial contexts.

In today’s society, the applications of psychology range from addressing mental health challenges to designing better user experiences and interfaces. Consequently, holistic training in screening, diagnosis, interventions, experiments, and programming becomes increasingly important.

Psychology graduates can pursue careers in mental health support, counselling, rehabilitation, and community mental health initiatives. Students can choose to pursue their postgraduate studies in clinical psychology, counselling psychology, rehabilitation psychology, and allied mental health disciplines.

How we facilitate it

Our programme develops an understanding of the mind and behaviour through learning that draws from psychology, neuroscience, and social-cultural perspectives. The field visits, internships, and reflective exercises help students gain exposure to diverse mental health contexts. The foundational learning is grounded in ethics and responsibility to society.

Students can aspire to become cognitive scientists, neuroscientists, and researchers. Students can choose to work as lab assistants or research assistants after their undergraduate degree or pursue master’s programmes in cognitive sciences and/or cognitive neurosciences from different universities.

How we facilitate it

Psychology graduates from our programme are equipped with skills such as programming with Python, statistics with R and gain a strong foundation in neurocognition through courses such as Cognitive Neurosciences and Brain and Behaviour. They are also exposed to various experimental techniques in cognitive sciences that enable them to design, conduct, analyse and replicate experiments. Our programme prepares our students with strong foundations to enable them to apply for top universities around the world for pursuing higher education in cognitive sciences.

Psychology graduates can contribute to child development organisations, learning centres, educational institutions, and schools. Graduates can pursue careers like special educators, school counsellors or learning support professionals.

How we facilitate it

Students will engage with different educational settings through field experiences and community learning. Courses such as developmental psychology, psychometric testing and assessments can help students to learn and navigate a diverse learning environment.

Psychology graduates can pursue advanced postgraduate studies in cognitive psychology, neuroscience, social psychology and other interdisciplinary areas. Graduates can also be involved in research projects and assistantships, preparing them for postgraduate programmes and doctoral studies.

How we facilitate it

The programme has a research bent that equips students with research skills like inquiry, methodology, data analysis, and academic writing. Students engage in research projects, collaboration with faculty and also in academic conferences.

Graduates can work with NGOs, public health programmes, community-based interventions, disability advocacy groups and child rights initiatives that work towards social change.

How we facilitate it

Azim Premji Foundation engages in projects, allowing students to connect to the real-world challenges. Through field practice, community engagement and internships, students can apply psychological and social skills to issues of social justice, well-being and overall human development.

Graduates can also pursue their careers in organisational development, human resources, employee well-being and people-focused roles.
