Today, there are thousands of young people who are keen to contribute to social change in a meaningful way. There is also a growing need in the social sector for professionals with academic preparation and capabilities for social action.
The postgraduate programmes at Azim Premji University aim to develop competent and committed professionals for the education and development sectors in India. Our students come with a strong blend of academic depth, practical exposure, and a deep sense of social commitment. Our programmes are designed to build professional competencies that align with the needs of organisations working across diverse sectors.

MA in Development is a two-year interdisciplinary programme that equips students with the analytical and practical tools to engage with India’s most pressing development challenges. Drawing from the social sciences, humanities, and development theory, it cultivates critical thinkers who can navigate the complexity of livelihoods, land rights, women’s empowerment, governance, policy, and ecological sustainability, with over 16 weeks of direct field engagement built into the curriculum.

MA in Education is a two-year programme that prepares students for the complex, multi-layered demands of the education sector. It builds practitioners who can operate across teaching, curriculum design, teacher development, educational research, and policy analysis. Grounded in philosophy, sociology, and psychology, and enriched by direct field engagement, the programme develops both the theoretical rigour and practical sensibility needed to contribute meaningfully to school systems, education NGOs, government programmes, and research organisations.

The MA in ECCE is a two-year, full-time programme designed to address a critical gap in India’s early childhood workforce by building a professional cadre of ECCE practitioners who contribute through field engagement and research. Grounded in developmental psychology, philosophy, sociology, and childhood studies, and enriched by extensive, graded field engagement across diverse settings — Anganwadis, creches, preschools, paediatric clinics, and early intervention settings — the programme prepares students for professional roles spanning teaching, teacher education, curriculum development, early intervention support, programme planning, research, and advocacy.

- Theory & Foundations of ECCE — an interdisciplinary understanding of children and childhoods, drawing on developmental psychology, philosophy, sociology, and childhood studies
- Care, Development & Learning — theoretical perspectives and their continuum from birth to 8 years

MA in Economics (with specialisation in Development and Policy) is a two-year programme that builds technically rigorous economists firmly anchored in the realities of contemporary India. Students develop strong quantitative and analytical skills — including proficiency in R, Stata, and Python — alongside a deep understanding of economic theory and institutional context, bridged with structured field engagement, survey methodology, and a final-year thesis or internship.

The Master of Public Health (MPH) is a two-year practice-oriented programme that prepares students for careers in public health with a strong commitment to equity, rights, and social justice. Rather than a biomedical focus, this MPH foregrounds the social determinants of health and the population orientation of public health, addressing the structural, economic, and political roots of health inequalities through deep community and health-system engagement.

The MSc in Climate Change and Sustainability is a rigorous interdisciplinary programme (one-year or two-year tracks) that prepares students to address the urgent challenges of climate change and environmental sustainability. Combining natural science with social, economic, and policy perspectives, it develops professionals who apply systems thinking and evidence-based analysis to real-world sustainability challenges across the private sector, government, civil society, and research.

Your work experience is important
The University values the work experience students bring, for many reasons.
Students with work experience bring a diverse range of views and ideas, based on their personal and work-life experience, that add to the richness of the classroom experience. Such sharing is an important part of learning at the University.
Many elective courses offered are sectoral or theme based and students with work experience contribute to these through their skills and knowledge from their past work.
There are multiple roles in social development sector that demands prior work experience and such students with postgraduate degree from Azim Premji University can look forward to challenging opportunities.
Career path in the social sector
The social sector today offers a variety of exciting career opportunities for students with a desire to contribute to the development of the country. The sector includes:
- Non-governmental organisations (NGOs), social enterprises, community-based organisations, civil society groups, funding agencies
- Consultancies, CSR departments, Development banks
- Academic bodies, think-tanks/research groups
- Public or government sector
- Bilateral and multilateral agencies (for example, UNO)
Social sector needs
- Project management/Administration functionaries: For effective project implementation and direction, direct community engagement, technical advice, coordination with donor agency/local government, budgeting and project reports
- Technical resources: Domain specialists and experts who can contribute in school education, curriculum design, assessment, teacher education, early childhood education, water/sanitation/hygiene (WASH), public health, livelihoods, legal reform, housing and infrastructure development, urban governance, climate change, policy analysis, etc.
- Researchers: At think-tanks, as consultants, and in Universities. In addition, social entrepreneurs capable of innovative thinking are needed to ideate, create and implement path-breaking solutions to social problems.
Facilitating admissions for students with work experience
- We provide additional weightage in the interview process for applicants with work experience.
- The University provides extensive scholarships in the form of fee waiver, both for tuition fees and accommodation and food charges. The scholarships are based on the family’s income and not on the current earning of the student.
- Applicants with more than 3 years of work experience after graduation receive a guaranteed 50% tuition-fee waiver.
- Educational loans are also facilitated by the University. The loans cover all expenses – tuition, accommodation and food charges. Students may take a full loan or part loan to pay for the expenses not covered by the scholarships.
In addition, a limited number of project-based assistantships are available on campus, where students work 10 – 12 hours per week and are paid monthly. This is particularly useful for students to support their day-to-day expenses.
