Biography

Diptarup is an evolutionary biologist, with interests at the interface of evolutionary genetics and ecology. His current research focuses on understanding how stochastic processes affect the causes and consequences of natural selection.

He primarily uses a combination of statistical and simulation-based models to generate testable expectations and analyse population genetic and ecological data. He is also interested in statistics, particularly in applying machine learning-based approaches to analyse biological data. Along with his major academic interests, he likes to explore history of science, specifically that of evolutionary biology.

He obtained his Master’s in Life Sciences and PhD, as part of the integrated PhD programme at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. He carried out his PhD thesis work at the Centre for Ecological Sciences, wherein he studied mate search and mating decisions based on acoustic communication using a combination of theoretical and empirical approaches.

Before joining Azim Premji University, he worked on human evolutionary genetics at the National Institute of Biomedical Genomics (NIBMG), West Bengal. As part of this work, he studied the evolutionary mechanisms that shaped the genetic diversity across several human populations of South Asia.

Apart from reading history and fiction, he seeks solace in music and sports.
