Health Among Tribal Communities

Experiences and Learnings from the Ground

Header design updated

The social vulnerability of tribal communities in India remains an enduring concern. While the health status of tribal populations has improved over the past few decades, there remains an acute gap between the health indicators among tribal and other social groups. National Family Health Survey‑5 data shows that tribal communities bear a disproportionate burden of health conditions, healthcare access and outcomes including immunisation coverage, institutional delivery, anaemia, child malnutrition along with an emerging burden of non-communicable diseases.

The dialogue on Health Among Tribal Communities seeks to unpack and address some of the key vulnerabilities of tribal health taking from experiences and learning from the ground.

This is the first in the series of Dialogues in Public Health’ hosted by Azim Premji University to create a forum for exchange of knowledge embedded in the real world of practice.

The dialogue will centre on conversations around the health of tribal communities, bringing together representatives of tribal communities and practitioners (organisations, health care providers and others) having long standing engagement with these communities.

The event aims to –

  • Revisit some of the enduring yet neglected health concerns of tribal communities to understand what has changed/not changed and what can be done
  • Understand the emerging challenges in health for specific groups within the tribal communities
  • Exchange experiences and learnings from practices that have worked or have potential to address long-standing and emerging concerns
  • Seek out opportunities for facilitating greater ownership of health among tribal communities beyond just delivering of health services
