Bread and Roses
Join us in our pursuit of understanding labouring lives across varied spectrums of workforce participation
International Labour Day (May 1) represents working peoples’ everyday struggles. The International Labour Organisation (ILO) describes it as a day of labour and solidarity.
In that spirit, Labour Day Week is being organised at the University. ‘Bread and Roses’ signifies the fight for ‘bread’ to keep the body going, as well as ‘roses’ to imply the dignity of labour.
We have the following sessions planned:
- invited talks by Anuradha Talwar (Paschimbanga Khetmajoor Samiti), Bezwada Wilson (Safai Karamchari Andolan), and Shaik Salauddin (Telangana Gig and Platform Workers’ Union and Indian Federation of App-based Transport Workers),
- a workshop,
- a poetry session,
- creative performances,
- a quiz,
- film screenings,
- students’ posters from the course practicum
Join us in our pursuit of understanding labouring lives across varied spectrums of workforce participation — formal and informal, organised and unorganised, gender, caste, adivasi, and migrant/native identities.
