About the session

Is effective leadership in development organisations only about the ability to implement multiple programmes and manage teams? Or are organisational leaders also expected to develop a broader understanding of development theories, India’s development journey, approaches to development action, and organisational culture and leadership? How can leaders deepen their perspectives on the wider historical processes and lived experiences that shape development realities in India, and use these insights to better inform their work?

The Postgraduate Diploma in Development Leadership (PGDDL) seeks to enhance the understanding of development leadership beyond programmatic considerations by helping participants situate their rich experiences within a broader understanding of civil society and its trajectories. It invites participants to reflect on the changes shaping the development sector, consider where we stand today, and explore the lived experiences that the development sector can make to the people of India.

Why attend?

The session encourages participants to think beyond surface-level trends and examine how digital cultures shape narratives, representation, and public discourse within the development sector. It offers an opportunity to engage with questions around technology, power, visibility, and the shifting dynamics of outreach and advocacy in a rapidly changing media environment.

Who should attend?

This programme is for professionals with eight or more years of experience in the development sector (like livelihood, sustainability, education, health, sanitation and hygiene, ecology, etc.) currently at a senior position in an organisation. It is open to those working in NGOs, social movements organisations and grassroots organisations.

Eligibility criteria

• Undergraduate degree in any discipline
• Eight or more years of work in any domain of the development sector (like livelihood, sustainability, education, health, sanitation and hygiene, ecology, etc.), preferably with marginalised groups in urban or rural locations
• Currently in leadership roles in their respective organisations, or likely to move into such roles within the next three years
• Consent and recommendation from the applicant’s current employer
• Fluency in English (reading, written, spoken)
