Karnataka Crime Victimisation Survey 2019

Abstract

The Karnataka Crime Victimisation Survey report is based on the findings of a crime victimisation survey undertaken by Azim Premji University with the assistance of independent field investigators in 2017. The main objective of the survey was to understand the scope and nature of crime in the state and to analyse the extent to which the National Crime Records Bureau records capture the rate of crime in Karnataka.

In 2017, Azim Premji University, with the assistance of field investigators from Sigma Research and Consulting Pvt Ltd (‘Sigma’), undertook a crime victimisation survey in Karnataka (‘KCVS’) to understand the scope and nature of crime in the state and analyse the extent to which NCRB records capture the rate of crime in the state. The objectives of KCVs were to:

1. Understand the rates of crime victimisation along various socio-economic categories.

2. Estimate the rate of under reporting of crimes in the official crime data released by the NCRB.

3. Understand who the victims are, the spread of crime, and the circumstances in which victimisation takes place.

4. To understand why victims of crime engage or disengage with the criminal justice system.
