Certificate in Test Development
Familiarise yourself with standardised test practices and global processes in designing competency-based certification examinations.
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 recommends board examinations to be redesigned in a way that they test core competencies rather than content memorisation. School leaving examinations in India, despite attempts at reform, have the features of high-stakes achievement tests. They also influence how schools and teachers approach the curriculum with teaching to test replacing all other concerns in the year leading to the board examination.
Additionally, the method used for question paper design continues to be bound by conventional structures and standards leading to inadequate representation of subject-specific competencies; greater focus on assessment of lower-order thinking skills; and poor design of assessment items.
The need to equip item authors, moderators and evaluators to skillfully design competency-based assessments that are better aligned to test the core knowledge, values, skills and dispositions of a subject is much desired.
The Certificate in Test Development programme offered by Azim Premji University will help familiarise participants with standardised test practices, and processes that are followed globally in designing competency-based certification examinations.
This programme is designed as a unique blend based on theoretical understanding of the domain of assessments and rich practical experience of directly working with teachers, teacher educators and other education functionaries. At the end of the programme, participants will be able to:
- Describe the principles of test design in a manner that is aligned to curricular goals.
- Discuss current research on assessment test design and global standards of assessment.
- Analyse curricular content and prepare test instruments that meet assessment objectives.
- Design protocols for evaluation that inform test design and vice versa.
- Teachers and teacher educators interested in being item authors, moderators, and evaluators for central and state boards.
- Applicants should have an undergraduate degree in any discipline with a working knowledge of English (reading, writing, and speaking).
- Online — This will be conducted through lectures, group work, case study analysis, presentations, readings, discussion forums on Learning Management Systems, audio/video materials, one-on-one office hours and regular assessment.
- Face-to-face interaction — Each certificate programme will have one-week on-campus residential component, providing opportunities for sharing of learning through intensive group work, discussions and interaction with experts and practitioners from the field.
