Sumithra joined Azim Premji Foundation as a fellow in 2013 and worked in Puducherry district for about seven years in various capacities. Initially, she worked with science teachers in the district, then with primary school teachers. She designed and implemented courses and workshops for teachers in areas including science education, early language and math education, curriculum design, etc. 

She was part of the team that implemented the largescale qualitative assessment study on understanding teacher practices in the public school system in Puducherry. 

Since 2021, she has been associated with the School of Education as the field practice coordinator for the MA Education programme.
