Field Immersion ‑1 titled Exploring Diverse ECCE Context is a 3‑credit field course in semester 1 that aims to provide the students of MA in Early Childhood Care and Education an immersive learning experience.

The course endeavours to provide exposure and firsthand experience with diverse early childhood care and education settings, such as creches, Anganwadi centres and private preschools.  The course develops specific skills, dispositions and methods that prepare students with the methods to understand and work with children as a preparation to contribute meaningfully to the sector.

The field immersion was a deeply enriching experience that allowed me to connect classroom learning with real-world practice by engaging with children, educators, and communities in diverse settings.

- Nandita Dey, Student, MA in ECCE

What is the ECCE Field Mela?

At the end of Field Immersion ‑1 course, each students’ group comes together for Field Mela, drawing from their diverse experiences across different early childhood settings. This culminating event is a milestone to showcase the knowledge gained, along with the insights, and reflections nurtured through real-world engagement.

The ECCE Field Mela 2025 served as a creative platform for students that brought their field observations to life. Through a combination of visuals, narratives, reflections, and highlights, each group shared the unique stories, settings, and children that were part of their learning. The interactive format of the presentations encouraged dialogue, peer learning, and collective reflection.

The field immersion was a journey of learning by seeing, living, sharing, and feeling — a truly hands-on experience that brought our lessons to life.

- Parnei Vaiphei, Student, MA in ECCE

The ECCE Field Mela is the culmination of the field immersion — 1 and endeavours to fulfil the objectives of the course that are to,

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the diverse early childhood settings offering programmes for children below 8 years of age.
  • Strengthen skills in studying children through specific methods such as observation, interviews, documentation of practices and children in identified settings.
  • Examine the social, cultural, economic and other factors that influence early childhood programmes.
  • Develop sensitivity and ethical dispositions for working with young children.
  • Compare and synthesise field experiences to build a perspective on the diversity in ECCE settings.

The field immersion was a chance to understand the real meaning of early childhood education. Every child we met, reminded us that when we nurture young minds, we nurture the future itself.
