Chai Pe Charcha: On reclaiming Democratic values
A workshop for students, Learning to live together, was held on 7 November 2025 at Azim Premji University, Bhopal. It was the first in a series of workshops on the role of constitutional values and democratic practices in everyday life.
From helping students reflect on forming connections based on identity, to listening with empathy in their daily interactions within the University space and beyond — the workshop aimed at helping students grasp constitutional values not simply as abstract concepts, but as democratic practice in daily life.
- 51 Participants
- 2 Duration in hours
The workshop consisted of activities designed to simulate real life interactions. Based on the idea that the practice of democracy begins with one’s immediate social relations, activities in the workshop attempted to help students begin embodying values such as empathy, mutual respect and compassion.
“The idea of activity-based learning was the best because it encouraged everyone to participate and share their perspective. The group activities were particularly insightful, allowing us to understand each other’s viewpoints. Personally, I understood the importance of active listening and understanding each other.”
The workshop sparked a lively discussion amongst student participants on constitutionality in everyday life. It concluded with a collective pledge to be humane, respectful and empathetic individuals who will work towards creating an inclusive and democratic student community across diverse identities in the University.
“The workshop made me feel connected to the spirit of our Constitution. When we formed groups based on similar thoughts, I began understanding how people in real life also connect with those whose thinking is not the same as ours. It was interesting to see how different ideas exist around us and how much we can learn by listening to each other.”
