Epigenetics: Where Nature Meets Nurture

Join us as we explore how genes and environment work hand in hand to shape who we are, through the fascinating lens of epigenetics with Prof. Sanjeev Galande

The longstanding debate of nature versus nurture has now shifted toward a more integrated perspective, recognising that genes and environment are not opposing forces but work together dynamically across the lifespan. While our genetic makeup (nature) provides the blueprint for potential traits, the environment (nurture) critically shapes how these genes are expressed, often through epigenetic’ mechanisms.

Over the past decade, advances in genome sequencing and cutting-edge methods to study epigenetic modifications have revolutionised biomedical sciences. These developments highlight how environmental influences continuously shape gene expression, both in day-to-day life and across the entire lifespan. Understanding human behaviour, health, and development therefore requires considering both genetic and environmental factors.

Join us for an interactive session with Sanjeev Galande, Professor & Dean, School of Natural Sciences, Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence, Delhi. Prof. Galande will highlight the technological breakthroughs and transdisciplinary approaches that have deepened our understanding of disease susceptibility, with a particular focus on lifestyle disorders.

About Prof. Sanjeev Galande

Prof. Galande is a leading scientist in epigenetics and chromatin biology. After his PhD from IISc and postdoctoral research at Lawrence Berkeley Lab, he worked at NCCS Pune and later became Professor at IISER Pune, where he established the Centre of Excellence in Epigenetics. His research explores how chromatin dynamics regulate gene expression, regeneration, cancer, behaviour, aging, and evolution. Recipient of major national and international fellowships and awards, including the Shantiswaroop Bhatnagar Prize, he is an elected fellow of India’s premier science academies.
