Inauguration | Census Data Research Workstation

Encouraging research on micro-data from the Indian census

The Indian census has a rich tradition and enjoys the reputation of being one of the best in the world. The Office of Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India (ORG-CCI) conducts a decennial Population Census under the Census Act 1948, tabulates and disseminates the census data through its state offices known as the Directorate of Census Operations (DCOs). After the census operation, ORG-CCI, and DCOs tabulate the data in proper format and make it available for use by all concerned.

The census data is the unit-level data that brings a wealth of information on the various socio-economic indicators. The decennial census has a huge array of information collected from each person in the country on various subjects like social, demographic, economic, and other related aspects. Information about the household and housing conditions, amenities, and available assets is also collected during the Census survey.

To promote research, the Office of Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India established workstations in different Universities/Institutes for research on micro-data from the Indian census through a Memorandum of Understanding.

Directorate of Census Operations, Karnataka, will inaugurate the Census Data Research Workstation, by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Azim Premji University, Bengaluru.

  • Directorate of Census Operations, Karnataka
  • Indu Prasad, Vice-Chancellor, Azim Premji University
  • The workstation is to permit qualified researchers optimum use of anonymised micro-data from the census for in-depth research by allowing access for generating cross-tabulations not published by the census.
  • The facility is open to all members and students of Azim Premji University, and external researchers for academic purposes.
  • The facility has desktops with analytical software (SPSS & STATA) and a printing facility.

Researchers can submit a formal request for cross-tabulation data along with their research proposal to the Data Centre, Knowledge Resource Centre (KRC), Azim Premji University, Bengaluru.

The proposal will be reviewed by the Steering Committee, and based on the decision of the committee the researcher will have access to the cross-tabulated census data. All researchers have to work on their proposal using the dedicated physical space of the Data Centre.
