Academic Resource Centre (ARC)

This centre is a dedicated learning space and faculty unit at the University. Its vision is rooted in our commitment to advance educational equity and student flourishing.

We provide support in three broad areas:

  • Foundational skills: English language, basic quantitative and data-analysis skills, etc.
  • Co-academic skills: Writing in context, citation practices, literature review, etc.
  • Transferrable skills: Public speaking, productivity softwares, time management, etc.

The ARC is a welcoming, non-judgmental, and affirmative space by design. It serves as a bridge between our students’ academic engagements and their life aspirations.

ARC Programmes and Initiatives

The ARC’s programmes and initiatives are grounded in the understanding that our students come from diverse backgrounds, with vastly different educational experiences. Our initiatives, therefore, are intentionally accessible and run throughout the academic year, providing continuous support — from entry to graduation.

Summer Pathways

The Summer Pathways is a pre-commencement, academic orientation programme organised by the ARC. It is designed to help incoming students transition into the University’s academic culture and community life, so that they begin their journey here with confidence, clarity, and a strong sense of belonging. Students required to attend the Summer Pathways are identified through the admissions process.

Tutorial support

During the semester, the ARC offers various forms of tutorial support to enhance students’ academic engagement.

 Walk-in tutorials

Walk-in tutorials are open, one-on-one or small-group sessions where students can drop in without prior appointments to discuss specific academic challenges — be it understanding readings, structuring essays, or preparing for assessments. These sessions are meant to foster independent learning through conversation, guided reflection, and practice, rather than direct instruction.

Group-based tutorials

Group-based tutorial sessions are more structured and bring together small cohorts of students referred by the faculty for additional foundational or co-academic support. These sessions focus on strengthening core academic skills — such as reading, writing, discussion, and analytical reasoning — through collaborative exercises and guided practice, enabling students to engage more confidently and effectively with their coursework.

Peer tutoring

In collaboration with faculty across the University, the ARC facilitates one-on-one sessions where senior students mentor their juniors’ facing challenges in specific courses. This programme adds an additional layer of academic support and fosters a sense of community and mentorship.

Workshops 

Every semester, the ARC curates a series of workshops in its focus areas, aimed at developing transferable academic and professional skills that support long-term success. The workshops offered are varied in nature, addressing a wide gamut of skills — from strategic reading, note-taking, academic writing, and effective communication to the use of digital tools such as Excel and Zotero. The workshops also cover the development of professionally relevant soft skills, like time management, organisation, and ICT, etc.

Creative Expressions courses

The ARC also manages a large set of courses offered to both undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University aimed at fostering embodied learning and aesthetic education.
