Facilities and Financial support

Working towards making the robust sporting and fitness culture of the University stronger

Indoor Sports Complex

Since the beginning, Azim Premji University has believed that sports play a crucial role in the development of social relations and society.

The indoor sports complex stands as a milestone in the sporting culture of our University. The 23,500 sq ft structure consists of badminton courts, a table tennis room, a basketball court, a fitness room, and a Gym.

It is open to hosting badminton matches across 6 badminton courts, table tennis matches across 4 tables, basketball matches at the large basketball court, and fitness and physiotherapy sessions.

The establishment of the indoor sports complex at the University is monumental from a sports and fitness perspective. It will contribute to making the robust sporting and fitness culture of our University much stronger, and would motivate many more people to inculcate sports and fitness into their lives.

Sports at Residences

On some days, with hectic workloads, going to the ground can be seen as a rare possibility. Thus, we bring sports to you! We have equipped every residence with a provision for table tennis, carrom, and board games as these are very popular amongst students.

Financial Support

As part of the University’s efforts to support sports and athletes, we have instituted financial assistance to students who have been selected to participate in state or national-level competitions approved by the sports governing body.

The University has approved up to INR 10,000 for travel and food allied expenses.

Many students have already benefitted from this assistance and this initiative is expected to encourage more students in the coming years.

Clubs and Coordinators

All sports and fitness activities are organised through student-driven sports clubs. Here, interested students take lead in forming clubs or joining existing clubs and organising events, sports games, and other activities.

Currently, there are more than 15 clubs that are proactively able to envisage, design, and operationalise their semester engagements with assistance from SFC. More clubs are meant to emerge with new students and their interests.

The Sports Coordinator organises, facilitates, and leads students in sports and fitness club initiatives at Azim Premji University. Each club has around 4 – 7 coordinators who help organise leagues, free plays, workshops, tournaments, and open houses and communicate with coaches. They also prepare the club budget, conduct weekly meetings, manage schedules and maintain resources of the club activities.

It’s never easy to start something afresh. However, with the right people and passion, things can be as smooth as a well-timed smash in badminton. This is a valuable lesson I learned as a founding coordinator of the badminton club at Azim Premji University.”
