Biography
Anubhuti teaches in the School of Education. She has previously taught as visiting faculty at Azim Premji University, Bhopal. She holds an MPhil and PhD in Theatre and Performance Studies from the School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi. She completed her undergraduate degree in English Literature at Delhi University and her MA in Arts and Aesthetics at Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Her research examines two contrasting developments in Hindustani music in the twentieth century: the emergence of the term ‘gharana’ as an aesthetic category through which the style of musicians came to be identified, evaluated and appreciated, and the musician Kumar Gandharva’s declaration that his style did not belong to any gharana. Locating these simultaneous developments within the context of modernity, her research explores processes of knowledge formation, questions of style, and the idea of freedom in music.
Anubhuti is also a practising Hindustani musician. She trained with Meera Rao, one of Kumar Gandharva’s senior disciples, for many years, having received her initial training in Delhi from Sarita Pathak Yajurvedi. In her musical practice and teaching, she enjoys working with different musical forms and has been exploring ways of developing a critical pedagogy for music. As part of this pursuit, she has worked on inclusive music education with the Eklavya Foundation, Muskaan, Bhopal, and Nalanda Way Foundation. She has also taught at Pathways School, Gurgaon, and Lilanoor Centre for Voice and Music.
