Mirza Ghalib Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota with Amit Basole

Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan, one of the most influential writers in Urdu and a veritable legend in his own lifetime, is known to us by his nom de plume — Ghalib.

Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota — The World of Ghalib is presented by Amit Basole, who heads the Centre for Sustainable Employment at Azim Premji University. Basole also has to his credit a book, co-authored with Lahore-based writer Anjum Altaf. Titled Thinking With Ghalib — Poetry For A New Generation, it places Ghalib’s poetry within the socio-political context of modern-day India and Pakistan.

In much the same spirit, this show is peppered with vignettes about Ghalib’s legacy, his contemporaries, his unique views on life, religion, and more. This show, set in a time that was a unique turning point in our nation’s history, seeks to bring both the man and his poetry alive with meaning for a young and uninitiated audience. Rich with lyricism, wonder and replete with the sounds of Ghalib’s Delhi, it is masterfully presented.

This non-commercial show from Radio Azim Premji University is meant for educational purposes.
