Pedagogy Summer School on Development Macroeconomics

The global and the Indian economy have registered significant developments in the last two decades.  The Great Recession of 2008-09, the worst crisis the world economy has seen since the Great Depression of the 1930s,  highlighted at the global level the need for plurality in macroeconomics education. In the context of India, the economy has registered important structural changes with greater integration with the global economy.  The way in which the monetary and fiscal policies are presently conducted is sharply different from what was pursued before the 2000s.  Ironically, however, macroeconomics education in India has largely remained immune to these developments. Where as, what is required for vibrant policy making is an open-minded academic engagement between contesting viewpoints along with an understanding of how the real economy works.

Against this backdrop, the Development Macroeconomics (DevMac) research network along with the Centre for the Study of the Indian Economy (CSIE) would like to announce a Summer School on Development Macroeconomics to be held at Azim Premji University, Bengaluru from July 6 – 9, 2026. The summer school will aim to develop a pedagogical approach that emphasises real world macroeconomic issues and engages with pluralist ideas. The focus will be on macroeconomics and development economics for undergraduate level and Indian economy courses at the post-graduate level. It will cover key areas including Monetary Theory, Monetary Policy, Fiscal Policy, Economic Growth, Structural Transformation and Timeseries econometrics.

The summer school will involve as resource persons both academicians as well as practitioners in the field of policy and journalism. The school has primarily been curated for early-career faculty and researchers of economics in colleges and universities across India.

The participants will be chosen based on a statement of purpose and, preferably, a draft paper on macroeconomic pedagogy or any of the other theme areas mentioned above from a heterodox perspective. The selected papers will be presented and discussed during the summer school.

Travel by AC II tier and local hospitality will be provided for the selected participants.
