Rooted in Realities, Focused on the Margins

Explore how India’s public health system can be made more people-centred and equitable

Rooted in realities SM Post revised

About the Session

Public health in India has achieved significant progress over the past decades, largely through biomedical and technical expertise that has strengthened health systems and improved outcomes. Yet, deep-rooted inequities in access and opportunity continue to shape who benefits from these advances and who remains at the margins.

In this session, Mayur Trivedi will explore how India can build a more equitable and people-centred public health system, one that blends technical competence with a strong commitment to social justice. The discussion will celebrate achievements, critically reflect on the persistent challenges of poverty and systemic inequities, and re-imagine what it means to put the public” back into public health.

Bevin Vinay will join the conversation as discussant, offering insights on how rethinking education, research, and policy can prepare the next generation of public health professionals to engage meaningfully with these challenges.
