Beyond Textbooks and Classrooms: Learn how we teach

About the session

Are you curious about what learning looks like at a university? How does a university classroom foster learning in a different and exciting way?

Join us for this event to hear from our faculty how teaching and learning happens at Azim Premji University. Through short, interactive sessions across disciplines, you will get to know the kinds of questions we ask, the methods we use, and the classroom culture we build together.

This session will feature faculty from the Sciences (Four Year BSc Honours programmes) and Social Science taking participants through simple but key concepts in these domains.

Sharib Zeya will invite participants to think critically about what it means to have an objective view of the world. While we are often taught that our own perceived ideas are different from facts, this discussion will explore whether these observed facts can ever truly be objective. How is the act of seeing shaped by our perceptions? And what does it mean to search for reality in a world of half-truths? These are questions posed and answered in the introductory course in our BA in Social Science degree and this part of the session will offer a glimpse into how our teachers guide students through this framework of critical thinking.

This will be followed by an introduction to one of the most engaging occupational minor courses at the University — Biodiversity Conservation by Ovee Thorat. Ovee will share recent experiences from the course and conduct an interactive activity that explores what it means to collect data on different species groups and how conservationists adapt their work to challenging field conditions. This part of the session will introduce students to the exciting world of a conservationist’s work.

Together, these activities will offer a lively and thought-provoking window into university-level learning at Azim Premji University
