Understanding Contexts and Demistifying Concepts

Welcome to the homepage of the Economics group in the School of Arts and Sciences at Azim Premji University. If you are a student interested in our programme, please go through the Curriculum’ section of our website, and watch out for our admissions cycle. If you want to work with us as a faculty member in Economics, please watch this space for information related to vacancies.

Our BA and MA programmes are designed to equip students with a rigorous understanding of economic theory as well as quantitative and qualitative tools of empirical analysis. In addition, our courses emphasise the importance of historical and institutional analysis, particularly with reference to the Indian economy in a global context.

Several of our courses make use of innovative pedagogical approaches such as flipped classrooms, games, community-based learning. multimedia resources and so on. Learning does not stop at the classroom, however. Students are encouraged to discuss economic ideas with each other and with the faculty in various other formal and informal fora.

At Azim Premji University, we believe in integrating disciplinary outlooks rather than operating in silos. In our university, particularly in the undergraduate programmes, we believe in integrating disciplines rather than segregating them. In fact, throughout the first year of undergraduate programme, students go through a sequence of common curriculum courses which strengthen their understanding of India’s many pasts, present and possible futures. It is through such courses that our students build perspectives of the realities around us, and blend those into the subsequent courses in Economics.

Our goal is that students who complete the programme be philosophically grounded, historically informed, socio-politically engaged and quantitatively adept.
