Word, Sound, Image
Find out how literature can go beyond the written word and image and sound can have meaning too.
Word, Sound, Image is a unique course that expands your ability to understand and analyse literature beyond the written word, to image and sound as having meaning and allowing interpretation. Building on the discussion of texts and forms up to this point, the course units will include a variety of audio, visual and multimedia forms: the photograph, the song, the meme, the sound track, the cartoon, and cultural practices involving words, sounds and images. Structured around classroom exercises, student research and students bringing their own texts to class, the course allows for the study of formal elements of different kinds of texts — and their contexts of production and circulation. With the help of specific examples you will learn how technology and markets determine the form as well as meanings of texts.
