The Novel
Dive into the novel as a literary form, read some of its best expressions, and learn basic concepts that arise in novelistic analysis.
The history of the novel extends from ancient times to the contemporary. This course focuses on the modern period, through texts that arose from the seventeenth to the twenty-first century in different parts of the world. The course includes two novels in their entirety, and five others through excerpts of varying lengths. Like the course on drama, The Novel seeks to introduce you to the novel as a literary form, to some exemplary texts from the form, and to basic concepts that arise in novelistic analysis. A substantial engagement with the novel will expand your acquaintance with historical and literary techniques, and an understanding of the place of literature in society in different cultures and periods.
