Sustainable Waste and Water Management

Design resilient water and waste systems for a sustainable future.

This course examines integrated approaches to sustainable water and solid waste management under conditions of increasing climate variability, urbanisation, and environmental stress and gain practical experience in analysing real-world water and waste management challenges and designing context-specific, climate-resilient solutions under diverse climate and socio-environmental scenarios. Students will engage with the interlinkages between water systems, waste streams, public health, and ecosystems, with a strong focus on challenges and solutions in the Indian context. The course introduces policy frameworks, governance structures, and regulatory instruments alongside technological and nature-based solutions for water conservation, wastewater treatment, waste reduction, recycling, and safe disposal. Community-based approaches, decentralised systems, and circular economy principles form a central theme, highlighting how water and waste management can contribute to climate adaptation and resource efficiency.
