Poetry from South Asia

Encounter traditional forms such as the ashtapadi, the ghazal, the doha and the qasida, alongside several examples of more modern poetry from various regional languages.

A course focused entirely on reading poetry, the lens here is that of poetic forms from South Asia and in South Asian languages, though all readings will be in English translation. You will encounter traditional forms such as the ashtapadi, the ghazal, the doha and the qasida, alongside several examples of more modern poetry from various regional languages. By the end of the course you will recognise and work with the techniques, devices and vocabulary specific to particular forms of poetry, and find points of connection between what you engage with here and your earlier readings in terms of form.
