Environment Governance, Management and Conflict

Surveys the complexity, details and arrangements involved in natural resource management.

This course surveys the complexity, details and arrangements involved in natural resource management. Through a focus on the political and institutional dimensions of the key challenges facing environmental governance, we make connections between key theoretical frames, institutions and how they interact with real-world scenarios. With a close look at property rights and the history of legal plurality in India, this course examines who the stakeholders are in the implementation of governance. How do customary ideas of managing the environment meet institutional ones? Who are the different people involved in these modes of management? The course is a mixture of lectures, group work, case studies and documentaries.
