Climate Modelling and Data Applications

Bridge climate science and decision-making through models, data, and scenarios

This course is designed to equip students with the scientific knowledge and the application-oriented understanding of climate modelling for real world problems. While linking the fundamentals of climate modelling to the basic Earth system principles, students will investigate the hierarchy of models, their limitations corresponding to different use cases. The course also presents an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding and work with physical risk scenarios (e.g. SSPs), along with frameworks relevant for financial sectors such as NGFS and TCFD etc. Further, the course explores the underlying assumptions of these scenarios, temperature targets, emissions trajectories, and policy narratives. Using examples of different climate metrics such as radiative forcing, temperature scales (1.5°C, 2°C, >3°C pathways), and time horizons, students will contextualize translating climate models into quantitative risk assessments, analyse net-zero roadmaps, and design climate-resilience strategies. They will also exemplify use cases where scientific and data-driven approaches inform sustainability decisions. At the end of the course, students will gain skills to use, interpret and apply climate models to derive meaningful and decision-relevant insights for sustainability strategy and action.
