Advanced Synthetic Chemistry
Master advanced synthesis, from molecules to polymers and functional materials
Advanced Synthetic Chemistry focuses on the principles and experimental methodologies used to synthesize small molecules, macromolecules, and functional organic materials. Building on prior knowledge of chemical reactivity, spectroscopy, and organic synthesis, the course combines theoretical concepts with laboratory experience to develop advanced experimental skills, synthetic planning, and critical analysis. Students learn to design, demonstrate, and communicate synthetic strategies relevant to modern chemical research.
Starting with aromatic heterocycles and photochemistry, students move into advanced retrosynthetic analysis and total synthesis, reinforced through a multistep laboratory synthesis. The course then turns to polymer science — monomers, polymer architecture, and the kinetics and mechanisms of different polymerization techniques — before extending into supramolecular chemistry, self-assembly, and polymeric nanomaterials, including their use in drug delivery.
