Biography

Kunal Shahdeo is a sociologist working on political sociology, indigeneity, and democracy in contemporary India. His research is grounded in long-term ethnographic fieldwork in Jharkhand, with a focus on Adivasi politics, identity formation, everyday state practices, welfare institutions, and local political cultures. He is especially interested in questions of citizenship, religious conversion debates, nativist mobilisations, and the relationship between culture, power, and social justice. 

He received his PhD in Sociology from the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Bombay. His doctoral research examined processes of socio-political change in Adivasi regions of Jharkhand through ethnographic methods. He holds an MA in Sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University and a BA (Hons) in Sociology from the University of Delhi. He has previously worked as an Academic Fellow and visiting faculty at the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru.

Alongside academic research, he writes for public platforms on democracy, marginality, and everyday politics in India. Beyond academic work, he is a sports enthusiast and enjoys reading poetry.
