Giridhar Rao comes to Azim Premji University from International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (www.iiit.ac.in), where he taught languages and literatures. Before that, he was editor and public awareness officer at the crops research institute ICRISAT in Hyderabad. Concurrent with these assignments has been his involvement with the world Esperanto movement.
His PhD dissertation (University of Hyderabad, 1994) was titled “Beyond the Sense of Wonder: Science Fiction as Adventure Fiction”. His interest in science fiction led him to learn the language Esperanto. This in turn got him interested in multilingualism in society, and education policies for linguistic minorities. He has several publications in English and Esperanto on these themes.
Coherence between the ideas introduced in the course will be built through the pedagogy, such that the teaching of literature and writing can be meaningfully connected to the critical teaching of languages.
A course designed to equip MA Education students with a rigorous understanding of the nature of language and literature; as well as ways to navigate these with knowledge and nuance in curricular and pedagogic spaces.
