National Forest Martyrs Day is commemorated on September 11 each year to pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives to protect forests and wildlife. The day is aimed at creating awareness about protecting forests and the environment at large.

The Forest Rights Act

The Forest Rights Act in India, passed in 2006, acknowledges the traditional rights of forest communities, to land and resources. It gives them land titles and a chance to manage resources sustainably, and benefiting both livelihoods and biodiversity conservation.
