World Health Day 2025: Health in Indian Cinema
An evening dedicated to films and discussions to deepen our understanding of public health through storytelling.

Health is more than just the absence of disease. It has several facets, like the mental and the social, and is shaped by the conditions in which we are born, grow, live, work and age. Cinema has long explored these dimensions and determinant, portraying stories of endurance, coping, resistance and victories. While some films, like Gonoshatru and Kasav, are entirely dedicated to issues around health, numerous others offer subtle yet powerful insights.
Azim Premji University, Bhopal, will mark World Health Day 2025 with an exploration of Health in Indian Cinema. The event will bring together thought-provoking films and discussions to deepen our understanding of public health through storytelling. Selected youth of Bhopal will also share their insights on health from selected films.
Film in Spotlight
We will be screening Ek Doctor Ki Maut (1990), a cult classic directed by Tapan Sinha. It is based on the real-life struggles of an Indian physician. The screening will be followed by a discussion led by Sanjay Joshi.
Sanjay Joshi is a filmmaker, cinema activist, and publisher. He has been actively involved with the Cinema of Resistance since its inception in the year 2006. In 2015, Sanjay and his friends founded Navarun, a publishing house that has since released 65 titles. He is also associated with Jan Sanskriti Manch.
Join us as we uncover how cinema shapes and reflects our perceptions of health.
