Why an Undergraduate Degree in English, History, or Philosophy?
About the session
Are you drawn to Philosophy, History, or Literature? Do you often hear comments like “Nobody ever gets a job after an Arts degree” or “Why study history or literature in college when you can always read about them in your free time?” You’re not alone. These are questions many students (and parents!) grapple with when considering degrees in the Humanities.
This interactive session invites you to hear directly from our faculty about why studying English, History, or PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) is more relevant than ever.
We’ll explore questions such as:
- What do we actually study in these programmes?
- What kinds of careers do our graduates pursue?
- How do these fields connect with issues like jobs, social impact, and even AI
- Why are critical thinking, argumentation, and interpretation skills so valuable today?
And yes, the lighter side too — do professors and students of Literature, History, and Philosophy really “talk too much”?
No question is too serious or too silly. Bring your doubts, curiosities, and even your scepticism — we’ll take them all on!
