From Observation to Action: Identifying and Assessing Learning Difficulties
Early and accurate identification of learning disabilities (LD) is a critical step toward providing effective support for children with diverse learning needs. This case conference, titled “From Observation to Action: Identifying and Assessing Learning Disabilities,” brings together insights from two educators, through their rich experiences in working with children having diverse learning needs.
The session will delve into the nuances of classroom observations — what to look for, how to differentiate between typical learning variations and signs of a potential disability, and how to document concerns appropriately. The importance of using multiple data sources, culturally responsive assessment strategies, and interdisciplinary collaboration in the identification process, will be discussed in detail. Special focus to be on the challenges faced in over- and under-identification, particularly in diverse and under-resourced contexts.
What to expect?
Through real-life case studies and dialogue, participants will gain insight into translating classroom observations into actionable steps that lead to timely assessment and intervention. This discussion aims to build a shared understanding of inclusive assessment practices and empower educators to move from dilemmas to informed actions in supporting learners with LD.
