What is Biology?

Uses case studies from the Indian context, and provides a glimpse of the vast scope and interdisciplinary nature of modern biology.

Being the introductory course in the Biology major emphasizes two aspects: (a) developing student learning capacities; and (b) building an integrated understanding of biology that incorporates scientific and societal aspects. Genetics and Evolution are introduced to students as concepts that are foundational to the subject. Classroom discussions will be complemented by laboratory activities. Apart from providing an overview of biology, this course will inculcate in students qualities such as observation, exploration, imagination, and the ability to ask questions, which are essential for a successful biologist/scientist. Additionally, students will be introduced to proper laboratory practices and safety protocols and field based protocols.
