Introduction to Genetics

Explores the classic and modern trends in genetics as well as its applications.

Genetics is one of the cornerstones of modern biology and genetic techniques are routinely used in life sciences. With an emphasis on fundamental principles, the course will begin by exploring the historical progression of the concept of the gene starting from the work of Mendel and culminating in our modern, molecular picture. Thereafter, the course will examine the molecular basis of mutations and explore the genetics of bacteria. Towards the end, the course will look at modern trends and applications so that students can develop an appreciation for current disciplinary practices.
