Becoming a Reflective Information Scientist
Develop a broader and critical view of technology through discussion and introspection
This course has two broad objectives. First, it serves as an introduction to the information
sciences major and its various facets. Second, it develops the sensitivity that students in the
major ought to have for harnessing technology for social good. Using examples (drawn
largely from our everyday life), students are introduced to various facets of information
science including modelling, abstraction, optimization and data management.
Subsequently, students explore how digital technology is an integral part of information
science and how it can be used for addressing information problems of public interest.
Finally, students are encouraged to develop a broader and critical view of technology
through discussion and introspection. Examples of discussion topics include smartness in
technology, the role of Big Tech and the relationship between technology and society (in
particular, issues of ethics and power).
