Scientific Exploration for the Community
Sylvia Charles, Senior Researcher at IISC, Bengaluru, a BSc Biology (2015−2018) graduate on why science interests her, her journey from a curious undergraduate to a seasoned researcher and what’s forthcoming.

On why science interests her
My journey into the world of science commenced during my undergraduate studies in Biology at Azim Premji University. Immersed in the foundational principles of life and physical sciences, I delved deep into the intricate mechanisms governing living organisms. The University’s robust research programme ignited my passion for scientific inquiry and played a pivotal role in honing my creative, logical, and analytical skills. This transformative experience exemplifies the profound impact of a challenging yet supportive educational environment, inspiring a lifelong commitment to scientific exploration and meaningful societal contribution.
On her career path
Building on a solid foundation, I pursued an MSc in Biotechnology and excelled. My research spans structural biology, plant physiology, and pest management, leading to publications in the Journal of Structural Biology and the Journal of Indian Association for Environmental Management, and presentations at ILSE and international conferences.
Currently, I am a Senior Research Fellow at the Indian Institute of Science, where I work on elucidating the structural characteristics of the Flavivirus using advanced Cryo-EM techniques. My contributions to the COVID-19 facility underscored my adaptability and commitment to addressing global health challenges. These experiences have enriched my scientific expertise and reinforced my responsibility to leverage scientific knowledge for societal betterment.
Proficiency in various laboratory techniques like virology and molecular biology and my computational skills in Python and R enhance my ability to analyse and interpret biological data effectively. In my constant endeavour to upskill myself, I have also completed my BEd and cleared many state and national competitive exams. These accomplishments encourage me towards effective scientific contributions in the future.
What is forthcoming?
Eager to advance my knowledge of biology, I transitioned from an undergraduate student to a seasoned researcher, fuelled by Azim Premji University’s nurturing environment. My doctoral research targets largescale mammalian cell manufacturing for vital healthcare therapeutics. Focusing on suspension cell bioreactors, I aim to optimise designs for cost-effective production, potentially revolutionising therapeutic availability globally.
