Perspectives and Skill Building for Local Development Action

This programmes is commonly known as Community leadership development programme”. The pilot long duration programme is a 5 module,16 day ( 96hrs) programme.

We are coming up with a shorter version of the course with 2 modules spread across 12 days (72hrs).

Why this course and for whom?

Self-driven conscientious, passionate individuals are always found in rural and urban setting who pick up local social issues and attempt to address them in various ways. This is seen in women tackling gender-based violence and Adivasis fighting for forest rights. It is also evident in pioneering farmers sharing their experiments and local youth ensuring people receive their government entitlements.

These individuals are embedded in a village or urban community have developed credibility and trust among them and mostly work in the democratic framework of citizen engagement with the state. These individuals learn on the job, sometime supplemented by attending a training conducted by some Civil Society Organizations (CSO) working in the local area. Some of these individuals in eventually form an organisation which brings in other such people in a team and start working on some of the issues in a more systematic manner. 

The course named Perspective and skill building for local development Action is specifically designed to address their capacity building needs to enhance their ability to act on issues of their choice. Some of these individuals will be identified through a curated selection process involving the CSOs working in the local area and taken through multiple course units interspersed with field actions and facilitated reflections with the expectation that the individuals will be able to act more effectively and systematically on the ground. 

What do they learn?

Participants learn about the following through simple pedagogical methods: 

  • Basics of constitutional values
  • Basics of democracy as an idea
  • Different vulnerabilities
  • Basics of local governance in India
  • Different soft skills and field engagement skills
  • Problem solving methods
  • Community mobilisation techniques
  • Engagement with different schemes and programmes
  • Documentation techniques
  • Use of technology and social media in field work

On completion of the course, the participants would be able to:

  • Identify structural inequalities in a village/​town 
  • Derive ways of addressing inequalities through the application of  constitutional values and legislative promises. 
  • Describe the mandate of local governance processes for voice, participation and social change.
  • Mobilise groups to engage with local institutions for planning social actions such as claim making of the rights/​entitlements, etc.
