Social-media use, Identity and Mental Health Vulnerability among Indian adolescents

Over the past decade, social media has emerged as one of the most influential arenas in which young people in India negotiate identity, belonging, and self-expression. Platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, and newer short-video apps have become not only channels for communication but also spaces where norms, aspirations, and cultural affiliations are continuously performed’ and redefined. A systematic study of social media and identity formation among India’s youth is essential to understand these dynamics, anticipate potential risks, and examine the effects on youth mental health and civic engagement. Such research will provide critical insights for educators, policymakers, and technology designers alike. Hence, this study explores how social media behaviours (platforms, usage, post content, and engagement) shape identity formation, mental health vulnerability, cognition and ideological alignment among Indian youth aged 15 – 25.
