About the play

The Prophet and the Poet, an internationally acclaimed play by Bangalore Little Theatre (BLT), is based on the correspondence between Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore spanning 25 years, set against the backdrop of the Indian freedom struggle. These exchanges highlight the significant differences between the two towering personalities on various issues, particularly regarding the form and substance of the freedom movement. These differences widened over the years. However, they maintained genuine respect and love for each other steadfastly despite the differences.

This was the kind of political maturity that prevailed in India during those times. The play has been used in several senior-level leadership development programmes, focusing on the organisational conditions that create a culture of maturity in internal and external transactions.

Bangalore Little Theatre had the privilege of staging the play for the President of India and at places associated with Gandhi and Tagore – Sabarmati Ashram, Santiniketan, and Jorasanko Thakurbari (Rabindra Bharati). In 2014, Prasar Bharati commissioned a telefilm on the play. The film was telecast several times over Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti.

Hosted by IHA in collaboration with Azim Premji University.
