Teaching Mathematics in the Middle Stage

For Mathematics major students

Teaching mathematics requires knowledge of curriculum, content, students’ reasoning, thinking and common misconceptions. It includes ways of communicating the content in a manner that makes sense to the students and gives them a glimpse of mathematical thinking, its structure and ever-increasing abstraction. This course aims to familiarize the student-teachers with the content of middle-school mathematics and unpack the content to make it meaningful and purposeful to students of this age. The course will deal with several abstract ideas that serve as a bridge between primary mathematics and secondary mathematics and explore the challenges and possibilities of learning this content for school students. It will also provide opportunities to analyse textbooks and students’ work and plan and transact lessons.
