Reading the City: Language, Media, Culture, and Bangalore

Develops new perspectives on the city they have been studying and living in

Reading the City: Language, Media, Culture, and Bangalore is a core course for students in the sixth semester of the BA English programme. This is the second course under the category Perspectives”, the first course being Approaches to Literature. Within this category, this course is meant to teach students how to read” a single urban site using lenses and texts drawn from literary studies, cultural studies and media studies. Students will engage dynamically with the city they live in – its literature and language traditions, layered cultural practices, and the ways in which the city lives in and through media practices. The objective of the course is to render the city a text, or rather a series of texts and textualities, that students can critically study through different methods.
