Approaches to Development Interventions and Action
Critically examine different models of development interventions and design interventions to address specific development problems
Professionals in Social Sector Organisations (SSOs) are immersed in development interventions and actions of their organisations. These actions are typically shaped by certain normative positions, shared goals, ground realities, agreed theories of change, and strategic thinking. Depending on the combinations of these factors at play, the nature of interventions could vary, such as community-led, service-delivery, rights-based, market-oriented and state-welfare approaches and strategies.
This course will introduce the plural forms of development interventions and how they are informed by various normative positions and frameworks. Besides, the course will help the participants comprehend how the intervention approaches and modalities are iterative, often reinforce each other, and are historically shaped. The course will also show how the design of the interventions speaks to organisational strategies. By examining different approaches to framing the problem and interventions by state and non-state actors, the course will help participants appreciate and analyse the similarities, differences, challenges and opportunities offered by each of the alternative approaches and sharpen their ability to frame and imagine different kinds of action spaces which may rely on different approaches or their combination.
