Biography
Saswata completed his MA and PhD in Economics from the University of Hyderabad, India. In his doctoral thesis, he demonstrated the link between inequality and growth by estimating the contribution of various socio-economic classes, especially urban elites, and the state/government.
His current research investigates the influence of growth processes on distributional dynamics in India. His research integrates both quantitative and qualitative methods.
Saswata enjoys teaching macroeconomics, microeconomics, Indian economy, development economics, classical political economy, history of economic thought, and data analysis using R.
He has publications in reputed academic journals and serves as a reviewer for internationally acclaimed journals. His research on the role of government behind India’s economic growth has recently been published in Review of Radical Political Economics. He collaborates with scholars from various prestigious national and international institutions and worked with the Southern Centre for Inequality Studies, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, on a research project about wealth inequality in the Global South.
He is an active member of academic communities such as the Young Scholars Initiative of Institute for New Economic Thinking (YSI-INET) and the Indian Society for the History of Economic Thought (ISHET).
Prior to joining the University, Saswata taught as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Economics, Kanchrapara College, West Bengal.
Beyond academia, Saswata enjoys singing, acting, photography, watching movies, playing cricket and table tennis, and exploring new places.
