Biography

Before joining Azim Premji University, Aparna worked at the Department of Home Science, University of Calcutta and THK Jain College, Kolkata, as guest faculty in Human Development, for two years. She has also been a visiting faculty in Child Development and Inclusive Education at the Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy (IICP), Kolkata and New Mission Training College, Kolkata.

She has over a decade of research experience in the field of disability and inclusion. Her doctoral research was on assessing teachers’ and educators’ perspectives and identification of barriers and facilitators in inclusive education in schools of Kolkata and uses both quantitative and qualitative methods.

She is an active member of the India Inclusion Research Network – a collaborative effort of researchers working in the field of inclusion in India and the United Kingdom. She is also a subject expert cum trainer in the flagship in-service teacher training programme on inclusion of children with special needs in West Bengal, conducted jointly by the Jagadis Bose National Science Talent Search (JBNSTS), Kolkata, and the School Education Department of Government of West Bengal.

She completed her MSc and PhD in Human Development from the Department of Home Science, University of Calcutta and a BSc in Psychology from Jogamaya Devi College, University of Calcutta. She also has a Diploma in Inclusive Education and a BEd in Special Education (Intellectual Disabilities) from the Netaji Subhas Open University (NSOU), Kolkata.

Her area of expertise is the assessment of psychological determinants of inclusive education. Her research interests include assessing barriers and facilitators of inclusion, teacher education related to inclusion and inclusive qualitative research.
