Vinod Zutshi, former Deputy Election Commissioner, on how India has emerged as a leader and model for electoral governance

India has emerged as a leader and a model for electoral governance’. The Election Commission, a constitutional body has orchestrated all our elections including the most recent one which by all accounts has been a stellar success.

How is the Election Commission managing national and state elections, year after year? What are the challenges it faces? What are the perceptions, and misconceptions political parties in the fray and the voters have during elections? How does the Election Commission address such issues, try to remain above controversy, and conduct free and fair polls?

About the Speaker

Vinod Zutshi, a 1982 Batch IAS officer, has extensive experience in Election and Democratic Governance. As Deputy Election Commissioner for nearly six years, he conducted major elections, including the 2014 Parliament elections, the 2012 Presidential and Vice-Presidential elections and numerous state assembly elections. 

Zutshi’s career also includes roles as Secretary, Ministry of Tourism and Culture, and Chief Electoral Officer, Rajasthan. An election expert for Jordan, he participated in international election missions and chaired the committee on NRI Voting. 

An MBA from the Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Delhi University, a Harvard alumnus and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) holder, Zutshi now consults in election governance, public policy and law.
