Urban Ecosystems and Sustainability: A Social-Ecological Perspective

More than fifty percent of India will live in cities by 2050.

As cities expand, they depend on the ecological resources within and around them and have huge impacts on the environment inside and outside the city. We are losing green and open spaces, facing health hazards and a shortage of essential resources. This damage affects different communities differently and urbanisation causes and creates great inequality. The poor are bearing the brunt of the damage and are excluded from important decision-making processes. In this course, we look at the relationship between human communities and ecological environments especially in the context of urban sustainability. We will explore new ways of looking at cities and think about how we can move towards a sustainable and just way of living together.
